State of the Union: A Limerick

There once was a president from Texas
Who from the start seemed certain to vex us.
Compassion he called for.
But instead he brought global war,
And built up the military industry complexes.

On the issue of extreme global warming
In the wake of Katrina’s fierce storming
How could oil profits be saved
While feigning the action all craved?
You could see in his mind a cloud forming

Disregarding the warnings of science
In ignorance he placed his reliance.
With his head in the sand
While global emissions expand
He holds progress back with defiance.

So what of the union’s true state
As Bush pushes yet another rebate?
Do you feel more secure now?
Are we on the right track now?
Will your grandchildren welcome their fate?

I have a tee shirt I wear with "01-20-09" on the front.  Republicans always ask me "What does that mean?"  Democrats know...357 days to go.

While I am certainly not happy with the way that Bush has spent money like a drunken sailor during his time in office, the theory that nobody out there in America likes him or thinks he has done a good job reminds me of the quote from a Manhatten socialite after George McGovern got trounced in the 1972 Presdiential election:

"I can't believe that he lost in a landslide.  Everybody I know voted for McGovern."

Will I be glad to see Bush go?  Yes, I will.  For me he has combined the worst of all possible worlds: social conservatism and economic liberalism (growing government at a record pace).  But that's just the Libertarian in me talking.  :dude:

There are also plenty of people that are equally terrified of having Hillary Clinton in the White House.  Different strokes for different folks, and hopefully we can all be tolerant of other people's viewpoints.

Now that we have politics covered, anybody want to talk religion? :D

(just kidding about that last part!)

Let's talk about something we can all agree on: CULEBRA!

Frank,

I think we all DO agree about Culebra, including keeping intact her unique natural beauty. Can we agree that she deserves protection from being hacked up and sold piecemeal to the highest bidders, and that whatever development does occur should follow best conservation practices?  For many of my most conservative friends, the biggest bone they have to pick is Bush's thumbing his nose at environmental responsibility, primarily through the gutting  of environmental compliance and enforcement funding.  Conservative and Conservation have a common etymological background for a reason.  We all want our kids and grandkids to enjoy Culebra, not Cancun East (nor the Hamptons South), eh?

Doug-

Couldn't agree more.  You are preaching to the choir, my friend!  It's really sad to me to see some of the seemingly unregulated development occuring on Culebra.  And while I don't blame Bush for that specifically (perhaps I am mistaken but the local PR government / system doesn't work the way you might think it would), Bush has been a major disappointment on that front and many others.  Have no doubt, there will be many "conservatives" dancing with joy when Bush leaves office! :)

Back to Culebra: My kids have a special bond with the island.  That is very satisfying to myself and their mother.  Although they have grown up in a fast-paced world, they truly appreciate the slower-pace of life that Culebra offers.  As a parent, this is something to cherish.

It is indeed our responsibility to maintain the island of Culebra for future generations.  It is my belief that development can happen, but needs to happen in a responsible manner.

Like most people, I came to Culebra as a tourist for a brief vacation.  From the moment I stepped off the ferry and onto the island, I felt a connection deep within.  And when I say "instantly", that is not an exaggeration.  I am no longer somebody who visits Culebra "on vacation".  I consider it my home and am fortunate enough to now own a home on Culebra.  With that good fortune comes a responsibility, and I intend to honor it.  Hopefully others will too, because once it's gone, you can never get it back.
